One practice the Lord led me to that I will reference frequently, is a 'breath prayer'. It is actually an ancient prayer practice. It is very simple, short, and meant to remind us that God gives us breath, and that we need Him more than we need air. It is a wonderful way to begin or end your 'quiet time'. It is also a valuable practice to slow you down, calm you down, renew your focus on God anytime during your day.
1) Pick a short Scripture that speaks to you. Let’s use Ps 91:2b “My God, in whom I trust.”
2) Inhale deeply and at the top of the inhale say aloud, ‘My God’. (Do NOT hold your breath!)
3) As you exhale, say aloud, “in whom I trust”.
4) Repeat once or twice if you wish.
5) Now just sit with the verse and ponder it. Allow the Holy Spirit to take you into a prayer around this specific verse...maybe for you today it sparks worship or thanksgiving or maybe a time of confession for areas in which He points out you are currently not trusting… If that is the case and you have had something to confess, just do it, and then repeat the breath prayer again to seal that confession and as a declaration of your resolve to trust God in that area.
A breath prayer can be 30 seconds in the restroom if that’s all you have. It can be repeated multiple times a day to re-focus yourself and calm any out of control thoughts, emotions, etc. It can be part of your devotional time…. It can be different every day.
You might choose one Scripture and focus on that for one day, one week, one month…until the Holy Spirit nudges you to move on to another one...
Enjoy His presence today! Breathe to rest!
