Rest #8: Are You Learning ABOUT Jesus or Are You Learning FROM Jesus?

There is a HUGE difference! Read on to find out what that is...

Jesus' invitation to "LEARN FROM ME" in Matt 11:28-30 is immediately preceded by being joined or yoked to Him. This is not a small point. It is critical.

First, consider that the word here for learn is NOT a word that means ‘to accumulate knowledge’. It is “manthano”= to learn to experience, to know more fully. So this is an experiential learning, not just ‘head knowledge’. Think about that. You have ‘learned’ your spouse through living with them. We ‘learn’ Jesus also by ‘living with’ Him…. Being in relationship.

Secondly, this is a learning FROM Him, not a learning ABOUT him. Although, surely as we learn from Him, and abide in Him we do learn about Him as well.

In order to know Him experientially, we MUST be securely, closely joined and submitted to Him (yoked). He does not throw His pearls before swine, neither does He reveal the deep things of Himself to the casual follower. It is only in a discipleship relationship that the privilege of this type of learning from the Teacher occurs.

As many wonderful things that Jesus taught to the crowds that followed him, He reserved the deep things for the 12, and even deeper for the 3 of His inner circle. They experienced Jesus on an entirely different level than the crowds were able to. Why? Depth of relationship.

So, the choice is ours – do we want to be one of the crowd, content to know Him from a distance, one of the 12, choosing to walk with Him daily as our Lord, or one of the 3 – in deep, intimate relationship where secrets are exchanged?
